Celebrating Sporting Success!

The Deputy Mayor Elect, Cllr Alcock was among the special guests invited to the Sports Awards Evening at Stratford Girls’ Grammar School on 26 May.  Students from each year were recognised and rewarded across a range of categories including: Team Of The Year, Most Improved Performer, Effort In Lessons and Sports Personality Of The Year.

Organised by the new Head of Sport, Emma Dathan, who joined the school in September, the evening was a huge success.  Dathan said “We are extremely proud of all of our girls and this event was the perfect opportunity to recognise those who have gone the extra mile in terms of performance or effort.  Our new facilities have revitalised our PE offer and there is so much more opportunity here now that it’s really worth shouting about.  We also acknowledged the tremendous results gained by the girls that compete in a wide range of sports at regional, national and international level.”

British international long distance runner, Sue Harrison, also a member of the school’s alumnae, lent her support to the evening, presenting the winners with their awards.  Harrison was part of an England team running in one of the world’s most prestigious ultra-distance races, The Comrades Marathon, before being selected to run for Great Britain in the World and European 100km championships in September 2011, bringing home a Silver medal.  She said, “I was delighted to have the opportunity to 'give something back' to my former school where my own athletics career began with huge encouragement from my PE teacher at the time.  The evening was a wonderful celebration of the girls' sporting achievements and it’s clear from the awards I presented that there are some extremely talented sportswomen here.  I’m enormously impressed by the school’s continued commitment to providing such fantastic and varied sporting opportunities and nurturing excellence.”
