Sophie's Unforgettable Cultural Exchange in Japan

Over the October half term, our Year 13 student Sophie had the incredible opportunity to visit our sister school Sano Nihon University Senior High School in Sano, Tokyo, as part of our international exchange programme. Immersing herself in Japanese school life and culture, Sophie experienced first-hand the traditions, hospitality, and unique rhythm of daily life in Japan. From exploring historic cities and UNESCO sites to forming lasting friendships, her time in Sano was a truly transformative experience. A group of ten Sixth Form students studying A-Level Maths and/or Economics had an incredible opportunity to visit NFU Mutual’s offices for an exciting half-day session focused on careers in investments. The visit provided students with valuable insights into the world of finance and even allowed them to experience managing a practice portfolio.

The event was arranged by NFU Mutual as part of their commitment to addressing the under-representation of women in finance—particularly in their Investment department. By welcoming aspiring female investors, NFU Mutual is taking an active role in promoting diversity and inclusion within the industry.

Exploring the World of Cybersecurity: Year 9 Students Engage in a Cyber Investigation Workshop

In an ever-evolving digital landscape, understanding cybersecurity is becoming increasingly crucial. To equip students with the necessary skills and knowledge, our Year 9 cohort recently participated in an immersive Cyber Investigation workshop conducted by the esteemed National Cyber Security Centre (Part of GCHQ).

Held within the confines of our school premises, the workshop aimed to demystify the complexities of cybersecurity while fostering a sense of responsibility and awareness amongst the students. Led by seasoned experts from the NCSC, the sessions delved into various aspects of cyber threats, protective measures, and the ethical considerations surrounding cybersecurity.

Throughout the workshop, students were engaged in hands-on activities and simulations, offering them a glimpse into the real-world scenarios encountered by cybersecurity professionals. From decoding encrypted messages to identifying phishing attempts, each exercise was meticulously designed to enhance the students' problem-solving skills and critical thinking abilities.

SGGS Art, Drama, and Music Collaboration with New College, Worcester.

Students from Year 12 at SGGS and across all year groups at New College, Worcester worked together to create a reciprocal exhibition and performance. This was a new collaboration and working with a school for students with visual impairment provided an extra level of challenge to our creative process. Using Little Red Riding Hood as our stimulus, both schools created a response to the story that we could share. Our students created an immersive experience that students from New College could walk through, listen to, and touch. On our visit to New College, we were welcomed to a puppet show, drama performance and art exhibition. We also spent time learning about how students learn with a visual impairment and the different methods that the school use to support this process. It was an inspiring experience for all staff and students involved.

In early Februrary this year, our GCSE Design and Technology students embarked on a magical trip to Disneyland, Paris. The group of students (and the lucky members of staff who accompanied them) attended the annual D.T Live Conference, where they had the opportunity to listen to some of the most influential 'players' in Disney and the wider theme park industry. The talks covered the facinating work that goes into making the park so successful and enjoyable; shedding light on the science that goes into 'The Thrill Factor' of rides and archelogical structures, and the marriage of psychology and creativity that influences their merchandise and marketting efforts. After engaging with the insightful Q+A and feeling fully inspired, our students were then free to explore the park and admire their work in practice.

The LGBTQ+ group at SGGS in its current guise was established in 2011. It is run by Year 13s in support of students in Year 10 upwards. It focuses on raising awareness of issues and educating both the group and others on issues affecting them.

In support of the current leadership, the school supported the group's efforts to raise awareness in our community of LGBTQ+ issues at the end of the summer 2021 term and then this month, we have celebrated as a school LGBTQ+ History. We are proud to work alongside these young people as they strive to educate us and it informs how we as a school can develop to make this environment even more inclusive.

Year 12 students visit Newman University Religion & Theology Taster Day

Recently we attended a Religion and Theology themed Learning Day at Newman University in Birmingham as part of an authorised out of school educational trip. We went to two talks, the first of which focused on ethical and religious language which strongly links to our A-level Religious Studies course, allowing us to add context to content we have already learnt. The second talk focused on the bible and art in reference to the story of Joseph and the Pharaoh of Egypt which was not a topic that we’d cover at A-level but would perhaps cover if we pursued theology and the reception of the Bible at university level. We found the second talk particularly engaging, and it has encouraged us to learn more about the topic area even though it’s not all covered in the A-level. The teaching staff and students at Newman University made us feel very welcome which helped create a comfortable atmosphere. We would recommend a learning day like this to anyone that is interested in a wide range of topics as many are on offer specifically at Newman; overall we would love to return to Newman Uni if another course of relevance appeared. Year 8 student, Mariam, secures Championship!

We are incredibly proud to announce that Year 8 SGGS student, Mariam secured the title of Girls Under 13's English Champion in Squash! Mariam won top spot at the AJ Bell English Junior Champs 2021 held at Nottingham from 28 to 30 October! This is actually the third English title for Mariam (she won the title twice before in the under 11's age group). The championship was cancelled last year due to the pandemic, but Mariam performed a fantastic return and is now reigning champion! What an outstanding achievement! We caught up with Mariam and asked her to comment on her win, how she prepares both mentally and physically in what must be a very intensive sport and atmosphere and where she will go from here.
