What will I learn?

  • The course is concerned with the creation and appreciation of theatre, involving your own work, the study of written theatrical texts and the analysis of theatrical performances seen.
  • There is also exploration of theoretical writings on the subject.
  • The course demands practical, creative and communication skills.
  • You will extend your ability to create drama either in a performing or production role.
  • You will also be required to write about drama and to develop your powers of analysis to become an informed critic.

Highlights

  • Going to the theatre regularly is the best homework you can possibly do! Theatre is developing all the time and by watching other performances you are introduced to new styles and techniques that you either like or hate. These opinions will then influence your own practical work. There are many theatre trips arranged by the Drama Department and the more live theatre you see, the better.
  • There are often opportunities to work with visiting theatre practitioners and practical workshops provide considerable opportunity beyond the set texts.
  • Students may also choose to participate in and/or lead extra-curricular activities such as Drama Clubs or School Performances.

Future Opportunities

  • This course is an obvious choice if you are intending to make a career in the theatre or the media, but the transferable skills you will acquire are also useful for anyone who needs to present ideas to others, work creatively within a team and communicate effectively at work..

Why did you choose Drama and Theatre Studies?

I am interested in going into theatre as a career, and I hoped that the A-level would give me a greater insight into theatre and acting as an academic base for my potential profession.  It is an academic subject, whilst allowing me to be very creative and active, in contrast to my other A-level subjects, Geography and Economics.  We have also had some great trips to London, Birmingham and locally to Stratford to see a variety of shows.  I have applied to several drama schools to do a BA in Musical Theatre and without taking Drama and Theatre Studies, I would not have gained the confidence needed to audition in front of a panel and many other candidates.  The experience, alongside the fantastic support of the staff here, have helped me to remain optimistic when there is such high competition for drama school places.

What do you particularly enjoy about the subject?

I have really enjoyed exploring different styles of theatre and analysing plays like 'Our Country's Good' and 'A Doll's House'.  My favourite part of the course has been the devising process where you work completely from scratch, basing your piece on a script but using the freedom to make it your own.
