Money and Investments

Money and Investments

This course aims to give an introduction to the dynamic world of finance and investment management. We begin by exploring different facets of personal finance - if you can't look after your own finances how will you convince others to let you look after theirs? Topics such as how to borrow money, how to save money including for your retirement and how to buy and maintain a house.

Next we move on to the investment industry by exploring how to manage a portfolio of investments including shares, bonds and hedge funds. Students will at this point start actively managing their own fictional portfolio in competition with each other.

Finally we finish with a consideration of the impact of the wider economical impacts of the banking sector, including a reflection on the 2007 Credit Crunch, as well as thinking ahead to potential careers in this industry.

Throughout the course we seek to develop basic financial literacy skills, alongside softer skills such as interpersonal, report-writing and public speaking skills.
