Practical Maths

Practical Maths

Designed for students not taking A-level Maths, but wanting to take the subject further than GCSE, this is a varied and practical course exploring daily applications of Maths as well as providing support for the numerical aspects of other subjects.

We start the course by looking at Fermi Estimations. There is a phrase along the lines of:"I wouldn’t do that for all the tea in China" - have you ever wondered how much tea there actually is in China? How many McDonalds burgers will be sold in the next hour? How many jelly beans can you fit in a bath tub?

Credit cards, mortgage rates etc. - welcome to your future! Would you like to learn more about these so that you are more prepared?

When you think of secret agents, do you think of Mathematicians? You may be surprised to learn how Maths can be applied to code- and cipher- breaking.

Studying Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Economics or Psychology but not Maths? Later in the year we look at some of the key topics covered in A-level Maths such as graph sketching, logarithms and statistical tests that will support you with your other courses.
