Exams & Assessment

Exam timetables: Public exam timetables are on the Exam Board websites (see below). Our Exams Office can only provide information about individual timetables when the final school timetable has been produced. Students are issued with a Statement of Entry to check their personal details and that they have been entered for the correct exam. They will then be issued with a final timetable which will include the time, date, room and seat number. Students with Access Arrangements will know they have this arrangement before their exams start as they will be using it as their normal way of working. 

Students will be issued with one hardcopy of their individual exam timetable.  Students and parents can also view an individual timetable on Edulink. 

Clashes of exams do occur and the Exams Officer will make the necessary adjustments. Students could be in lunchtime supervision if exams have to be moved to either the morning or afternoon. Occasionally there is a need for overnight supervision when parents are asked to complete a form and follow strict guidelines. 

A Contingency date is set by JCQ (Joint Council for Qualifications) and is a period of time specially set aside should sustained national or local disruption arise during the examination series. If disruption happens, the GCSE and A Level examinations would be taken any time up to and including the final date set by JCQ. Therefore, candidates are requested to make sure they are available up to and including the date set and not to plan holidays until after this date.  

Exam regulations: We follow strict rules and guidelines as set down by JCQ (Joint Council for Qualifications) for trial exams and public exams. We have our own Exam Handbook which all students must read and follow. A link to this is below. Parents can visit the JCQ website for more information. 

Results: Students will be told the date and how results are issued.  

Post-results: Post-Results Services are available in the form of a clerical check, review of marking, a photocopy of the exam script or the original exam script. A form needs to be completed detailing which Post-Result service is required and returned along with payment to the Exams Office. Requests for a post-results service can only be made by a student. 

Re-sits: Students should speak to the Exams Officer in the first instance. For summer entries, an entry will need to be made in January. A form will need to be completed and payment made.

Assessment

SGGS uses Fischer Family Trust (FFT) data to monitor, track and compare the performance of our students with others nationally, and to set targets. For GCSE targets these figures are calculated using Standard Attainment Tests (SAT) results from Year 6.  In cases where students have not done SATs, we use the result of the MidYIS or CAT test which is taken in Year 7.  For A-level targets, FFT use the average points score achieved in the student’s GCSE examinations, as well as looking at gender and other factors.

SGGS students discuss target setting with their Tutors from Year 9 onwards.  Both FFT and our own baseline estimates are the starting points for target setting and progression,  supporting this process rather than dictating it. We always combine these estimates with other data, the teachers' professional judgement and the aspirations of the individual student to provide honest and encouraging feedback.

We believe providing comparative data on the prior attainment of similarly able students provides us with an aspirational target that challenges our very able students.  We want SGGS students to understand that their progress is in their hands, to recognise where they may need additional support and to be able to ask for it.  Most importantly, this will help them to achieve the very best results they can.
