Sophie's Unforgettable Cultural Exchange in Japan

Over the October half term, our Year 13 student Sophie had the incredible opportunity to visit our sister school Sano Nihon University Senior High School in Sano, Tokyo, as part of our international exchange programme. Immersing herself in Japanese school life and culture, Sophie experienced first-hand the traditions, hospitality, and unique rhythm of daily life in Japan. From exploring historic cities and UNESCO sites to forming lasting friendships, her time in Sano was a truly transformative experience. Below, Sophie shares her reflections on a week she’ll never forget:
"The week that I spent in Japan was genuinely one of the most amazing experiences of my life, and I am so grateful for the opportunity! For the majority of the week, I spent time at Haruko’s (my exchange partner) school, which was really interesting, because there were lots of aspects that differed to life in English schools, such as staying in one room all day, and the students cleaning the classroom at the end of the day instead of caretakers or teachers. I really enjoyed being at the school and learning about Japanese school life – everyone there made me feel so welcome! Throughout the week, I was taken around Sano and its surrounding cities, including Ashikaga, and Tochigi city. I also got to go to Nikko on the Tuesday, which is a UNICEF site, renowned for its history and beauty. I visited Tokyo on both the Sunday after I had landed, and the Saturday before I left, which was super exciting as I got to see the modern and traditional parts of the capital. In the evenings, I spent time with Haruko’s family, which was really enjoyable, as they were so kind, and made me feel right at home. They taught me all about local Japanese culture, as well as showing me traditions that had been passed down the generations of their own family. I think that the biggest difference between the UK and Japan is how respectful everyone is to each other over there, whether in school, shops, or even driving. I am so lucky with the opportunity that I was given, and I will absolutely be returning to Japan soon!"
