Y13 Amy's Fundraising Walk

Since being diagnosed at 3 years old with Type 1 Diabetes, Year 13 student Amy has received medical care from the amazing staff in Diabetes Home Care at Birmingham Children's Hospital.  In December this year, she turns 18 and will therefore move into adult care at a different hospital.  To say thank you for all they have done for her and many others, Amy decided to do a sponsored walk to raise much needed funds for the hospital.  Amy has written a short piece for us here...

When I was three years old, I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes.  The staff in Diabetes Home Care at Birmingham Children's Hospital have been in my life since then.  They taught me how to inject my insulin by myself and how to safely manage my sugar levels, which enabled me to take advantage of all kinds of opportunities that came my way, such as the weekend trip to PGL in Ross-on-Wye which was fantastic fun.  In December, I will turn eighteen, which means that shortly afterwards my care will be moved to another hospital as I will be enrolled for adult care.

I wanted to do something to thank the incredible staff at Birmingham Children's Hospital for everything they have done for me over the last fifteen years, and decided to try and raise some money which will be used to help them to continue supporting young people as they come to terms with what it is to live their lives as Diabetics.

On the 7-8 August, Ruth Yeates, Lily Robson and myself walked 27 miles along the Stratford-upon-Avon canal.  We were very lucky with the weather - on both days, it was fine and sunny, which helped to keep our spirits and motivation high!  On the first day, we walked from Kings Norton to Lapworth (thirteen miles) and on the second day we completed the walk from Lapworth to Waterside in Stratford upon Avon (fourteen miles).  We crossed three aqueducts and had a wonderful time with lots of fun and laughter along the way.

So far we have raised an incredible £1979.75, which is almost double my target!  I am enormously grateful for the support I've received and I know the money will really make a difference - thank you!
