In March, we celebrated British Science Week at SGGS. British Science Week is a national celebration of all things science-related to promote the subject and celebrate achievements by British scientists.

At SGGS, we aim to inspire and engage the girls to consider what is possible within the realms of Science and to look at topics and experiments outside of the curriculum.

Science Bake-Off

As part of the Science Week, we gave all students the opportunity to enter into our Scientific Bake-Off competition. The brief was to create a baked treat with a science theme.  Miss McDonald and Mrs Porter invited students to bring their cakes/biscuits along to the Science department to be judged.

The Science department were absolutely astounded at the range and quality of cakes that the girls had made. There were volcanoes, hydrocarbons, conical flasks, a black hole, periodic table themed cakes and even a heart.

We rated the cakes on effort, appearance, science theme and, of course, taste.  After tasting tiny bites of each cake we were feeling a bit sick to say the least!  After much discussion and taking on board the opinions of other members of the department and the senior leadership team, we picked an overall winner and two runner-up prize-winners.

First place –

Maia Goldsbrough, 9 UCM, for her fantastic ‘Theory of Evolution and Newton’ cake.  This cake was of a very high standard.

Runners-up –

Cassidy Hornsveld, 9 UEN,  for her cake-pop hydrocarbons. Connie Twomey – 8 OAEB for the conical flask on a blackboard.

All girls made wonderful cakes – so whilst we only picked three for the top prizes we appreciate and recognise the sheer level of effort that the other entrants put into making their cakes.

In particular, we very much enjoyed seeing Jess Greenwood’s volcano ‘erupt’ like a firework, as well as Maddie White’s glow in the dark/UV conical flask and Emily Hoyle’s absolutely delicious cake for her ‘copper sulphate’ conical flask.
